Meet The Hotelier Behind La Perla In Alta Badia
Tucked away in the ski town of Corvara in Alta Badia and right on the slopes, the iconic La Perla hotel is the epitome of traditional Italian elegance and charm. We sat down with Michil Costa, the patron of this slice of la dolce vita in the mountains.
84Rooms: What's the story behind La Perla?
Michil Costa: Our parents have always loved hospitality. It was never just a job to them – it was something they passed down to us from 1957 onwards. Growing up, it was clear that they did it out of love, enthusiasm and for themselves. We now try to do the same.
84Rooms: What is the ethos that underpins the experience in your hotel?
Michil Costa: Taking care. People at the centre. Being responsible. Never leave anything to chance, pay attention to detail – finding inspiration and guiding our guests along the journey.
84Rooms: What is your favorite room or place in the hotel?
Michil Costa: Our bar counter. Antonio’s Cocktail Martini is a sight to behold. He knows how to mix it, its history, and then, to boot, serves it with professionalism, attention, an amazing Cerignola olive and a smile. I rest back against my chair, give it a quick whiff, raise it to my lips, and the first sip rushes to my head; the second, makes me smile; the third and last one gives me wings to fly.
84Rooms: Have you ever thought about opening another hotel?
Michil Costa: We have a thermal hotel. I’d like one on the coast. And one in the city.
84Rooms: Where do you travel to in your free time and do you have a favorite hotel you always go?
Michil Costa: Italy, the most diverse and beautiful country in the world. In my youth, I was lucky enough to explore many beautiful places: the Maldives, Tibet, NYC and Cairo, among others. My favourite hotels in Italy are Principe di Savoia in Milan, Borgo San Felice in Castelnuovo Berardenga and Il Pellicano in Porto Ercole.
84Rooms: What kind of guest is Hotel La Perla most suited to?
Michil Costa: Lovers of unconventional luxury, people thirsting for knowledge and who are not satisfied by tried-and-tested leisure and relaxation. Guests who look for a personalised service with a personal smile, who love caring staff. Someone who appreciates a family which is present, and who accepts we do not sell Prosecco here because it simply does not make sense.
