Halwina Hideaway
Surrounded by mountains and fir forests, the Halwina Hideaway is a love letter to Bregenzerwald architecture and craftsmanship. Sensitively built on the family farm — your host Edith still remembers her grandparents Alwin and Hanna working the land — this contemporary hideaway has been carved from the finest local timber and is nearly energy self-sufficient.
house Guide
Facilities
- Inside the hideaway, there are two generous apartments (110m2 and 250m2) with magnificent mountain views, where silver fir-clad walls and floors are set off by tactile floral wallpapers, industrial light fittings and giant oval baths. We love the bigger of the two apartments, Hanna; in addition to three bedrooms, it has a penthouse floor with a yoga deck, sauna and reading nooks. There is also a large LED TV with Sonos sound system.
- You can also rent the entire house with a total of 5 bedrooms and 4 1/2 baths (sleep 12).
- Garage space with a free e-charging station.
Wine & Dine
- You have everything you need to prepare everything from your morning coffee to Alpine-inspired dinners, but there is an option for the neighbourhood baker Sabine to drop off a daily breakfast. At dinnertime, ask Edith and Peter for their preferred spots in the area.
Budget
- Rates start at EUR 243 per night for Alwin and from EUR 580 for Hanna. A final cleaning fee of EUR 50 per person will be charged per stay and apartment. The Bregenzerwal Card is included for a stay of three nights or more.
Local Guide
Location & Setting
- Southeast of Lake Constance, Halwina is just outside Sibratsgfäll, an extremely pretty village in the Vorderen Bregenzerwald — which can be your base for skiing in winter, and for biking, hiking and river swimming in the Subersach in summer.
What to See
- Visit the Werkraum Bregenzerwald in Andelsbuch, which was planned by the architect Peter Zumthor and shows the diverse Bregenzerwald craftsmanship and the people behind it. There are regularly changing exhibitions and the Werkraum shop has lots of furniture, books, and accessories from the Werkraum members. Business people, craftsmen, guests, and locals come together at lunchtime in the Werkraumhaus. Regional dishes, cakes, and coffee are served daily. An ideal place to get to know the mentality of the Bregenzerwald better.
A Cultural & Culinary Tour Through the Region
- Directly in Sibratsgfäll there is the best home-style cooking in the Gasthof Hirschen, including a lot of warmth! In Hittisau and Krumbach, well-known restaurants that have been highly praised in so many gastro guides are lined up next to each other. Krone, Schiffle, Adler (Krumbach), Schulhus or Wälderhof in Lingenau. The cultural journey also begins in Hittisau with a visit to the Women's Museum. This place surprises - in the middle of the rural area - with exciting insights into diverse women's stories. In summer things also get exciting in the neighboring municipality of Krumbach: the Klassik Krumbach takes place every year in July! It continues in the direction of Bregenz, because that's where the Bregenz Festival with the play on the lake awaits - even in summer. Then on a detour to Weiss, the restaurant of the innovative chef Milena Broger. Strengthened, it then goes to the Vorarlberg Museum to marvel at the striking architecture and the current exhibitions.
